Is Microsoft Finally Ready to Put Its Tablet Talents on Display?

Microsoft will preview specially made Windows tablet software as soon as this week, Bloomberg recently reported. It will showcase the operating system's touchscreen interface running on hardware that uses an Nvidia Tegra chip, according to the report. "Right now, the stated strategy is to have Windows 8 run on everything except smartphones," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.

LG P220 ultraportable hands-on at Computex 2011 (video)

What would happen if you took a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and shrunk it down a notch into a 12.1 or 11.6-inch ultraportable but decided to keep the box shape instead of using a MacBook Air-like wedge design? We're pretty sure you'd end up with something like this sexy LG P220. We saw this light and thin laptop at the Intel booth at Computex and came away rather impressed. While the materials used (plastics) don't live up to the lofty standards set by Apple's popular notebooks, the innards appear to pack a serious punch. We don't have any specs, but the unit we handled was equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor, and LG's gorgeous super slim bezel-hating Shuriken display. We'll keep you posted with more info as soon as we dig it up -- in the meantime, why not take a look at this hot little number in our gallery and hands-on video after the break?

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that's designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week's use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC's release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it's definitely worth trying out if you're still using Android's stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we'll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

OmmWriter Brings Tranquil Text-Editing to iPad

When OmmWriter appeared on the Mac, I wondered what the fuss was about. OmmWriter is one of those “distraction-free” writing apps which block out everything except the text you’re working on. OmmWriter went one step further than the usual full-screen mode, adding in calm, meditative background music to the mix.
The app was fine, but if [...]
